Whether you want to use up leftovers or simply crave something cozy, these crispy stuffing balls are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!
Ingredients
For the Stuffing Balls:
4 cups prepared stuffing (dry bread cubes mixed with celery, onions, and poultry seasoning)
2 large eggs (beaten, to help bind the mixture)
1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth (plus extra if the mixture is too dry)
1/2 cup breadcrumbs or Panko (for an extra-crispy exterior)
2 tablespoons butter or oil (for pan-frying or baking)
For the Savory Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1.5 cups rich chicken, turkey, or vegetable broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
A splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (optional, for depth of color and flavor)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Shape the Stuffing Balls
In a large bowl, combine your prepared stuffing mixture with the beaten eggs and broth
. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients hold together well when squeezed. Scoop out portions with a spoon or your hands and roll them firmly into bite-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball)
. Roll each ball lightly in Panko breadcrumbs or extra dry stuffing crumbs to coat the outside for a wonderful crunch.
Step 2: Cook Until Crispy
Heat your butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Place the stuffing balls in the pan, turning them every few minutes so they brown evenly on all sides.
Alternative (Baking): You can also bake them on a greased baking sheet at 200°C (400°F) for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden and crisp.
Step 3: Whisk Up the Gravy
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute to create a smooth paste (a roux).
Gradually whisk in your broth to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly until it thickens into a rich, glossy gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 4: Plate and Drizzle
Arrange your golden, crispy stuffing balls on a serving platter and generously drizzle the warm, savory gravy right over the top
